Sodium Fluorosilicate

Sodium Fluorosilicate

Sodium Fluorosilicate (CAS Number: 16893-85-9) Supplier in Europe

Physical Details and Properties

Sodium Fluorosilicate (Na₂SiF₆), also known as sodium hexafluorosilicate, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Na₂[SiF₆]. It appears as a white crystalline powder or colorless hexagonal crystals, is odorless and tasteless, and has a relative density of 2.68. Sodium Fluorosilicate is slightly soluble in water (0.76 g/100ml at 20°C), insoluble in alcohol, and more soluble in acidic solutions. It is hygroscopic and can decompose in alkaline solutions to form sodium fluoride and silica.

Production Methods

At SoleChem EU, we source Sodium Fluorosilicate from reputable manufacturers using the calcium superphosphate byproduct method. This involves reacting phosphate rock with sulfuric acid to produce fluorosilicic acid, which is then neutralized with sodium chloride or sodium sulfate to precipitate Sodium Fluorosilicate. The product is clarified, centrifuged, washed, air-dried at temperatures below 300°C, and pulverized to ensure high purity.

Industrial Applications

Sodium Fluorosilicate is a versatile compound with applications across various industries:

  • Water Fluoridation: It is used in some regions as an additive for water fluoridation to promote dental health.
  • Glass and Ceramics: It serves as a raw material in the production of opal glass and as a component in ceramic glazes and cements.
  • Chemical Manufacturing: It is an intermediate in the production of fluoride chemicals, such as sodium fluoride, cryolite, and aluminum fluoride, and is used in ore refining.

Safety Information

Sodium Fluorosilicate is toxic by ingestion, inhalation, and skin absorption, with an oral-mouse LD50 of 70 mg/kg. It can cause severe irritation or burns to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system due to potential hydrofluoric acid content, which may also etch glass. It should be handled with protective equipment, stored in a ventilated, low-temperature, dry environment, and kept separate from food and acids.
